Birthday with a Grave (Lany, Oshi)

Birthday with a Grave (Lany, Oshi)

Post by Lanying Baozhai on Sun Mar 18, 2018 3:56 pm

Lanying frowned as she opened her crimson eyes. Today was "that" day. One of two days in the year that Lany dreaded the most. But, she'd made a promise to herself decades ago, and she intended to keep that promise. She stared up at the ceiling, the walls of her room a deep mahogany. Releasing an exhausted-sounding sigh, she sat up, stretched herself out a little, pulled the deep purple sheets away from her nude body, and pulled herself out of bed.

Walking over to her wardrobe closet, she opened it with a frown. She gave a casual stare at her body in the full mirror and reached for her outfit, along with her haori. After pulling her outfit on, she walked outside her room to the hallway and headed towards her daughter's rooms. She reached Meili's room first, and casually opened the door to see her oldest still fast asleep. Giving a gentle smile, she casually walked over and gave Meili a gentle shake.

"Meili, honey. It's time to wake up."

Lanying waited until she saw and heard Meili awaken before leaving the room, but not before turning her head and shooting Meili a motherly smile.

"I want you dressed and ready to go in a half hour. I'm going to go see if your sister is awake."

Lanying continued down the hallway until she came to her youngest daughter's room. Raising her hand, she gave a loud knock before opening the door and walking in.

"Oshi, it's time to get up."

Re: Birthday with a Grave (Lany, Oshi)

*KNOCK*

The sound reverberated throughout Oshime's head as it yanked her out of a dream where she was a pretty space princess ruling over her domain with an iron fist. The morning was always so...annoying, ripping her out of pleasant dreams to invite her to a world of fatigue and grumpiness. She always tried to tell Lanying that if was allowed to sleep in then she would not need the afternoon naps that Lany insisted on (not that she needed those naps to begin with, though Lany never succumbed to that argument no matter how much Oshime tried), but Lany was too much of a mother to agree to something that made that much sense to her child.

“Nuuuh...five more minutes...” Oshime mumbled, weakly waving her arm in the direction of the door as if that meant anything, letting it rest slumped over the siderail of the bed that prevented her from rolling off and onto the floor in the middle of the night. Her blankie and stuffed animals were so warm and cozy, why would she want to separate herself from them for any reason?

Lanying smiled as she walked over to Oshime's bed. She casually leaned up against the siderail and blew into Oshi's ear.

"Come on Oshi. If you don't get up, you won't get pancakes."

Normally, the pancakes would have been a lie. But for today it was the truth. She'd had the chefs get up early to prepare, as they too knew what today would entail.

“PANCAKES!”

It was like waking a tiger, sleeping one instant and wide awake and ready to attack the next. The cacophony of crinkling and bed springs creaking echoed through the room as the woman bounced on her bottom excitedly.

“PANCAKES! PANCAKES! PANCAKES!”

She continued to shout as she scrambled over the siderail and was ready to bound out the door, not worrying about getting dressed or anything else that would get between her and some pancakes.

Lany gave a small chuckle and gently grabbed at the back of Oshi's pj's, lightly pulling her back.

"Ah ah ah. First, we need you to get dressed. I hope I don't need to remind you what today is, do I?"

While Lany always had a tired expression on her face these days, today her face was almost...dead. Her eyes seemed to be reddened as if she had been up all night crying, and no amount of make-up could hide that. Even the small smile she gave to Oshi seemed distant, as if Lany herself was somewhere far-off. After letting go of Oshi's collar, Lany walked over to Oshi's dresser and pulled out a semi-formal outfit.

"Let's see...this outfit should work for today."

She casually set the outfit down before going to another drawer and pulling out a pair of Oshi's "special" undergarments.

Re: Birthday with a Grave (Lany, Oshi)

With the tug of her flannel PJ's, Oshime was reeled in by her adoptive mother and prevented from her yummy pancakes, at least for the time being. With the current attention span of a toddler, any moment spent away from her pancakes meant an eternity, even if it was to get dressed in something that would be less embarrassing to be seen in by the rest of the household.

Wait, what day WAS it today? A part of Oshime was telling her that today was not a normal day, especially with the...uncomfortable look Oshime saw in her mother's eyes. It was different, no matter how much the stoic woman tried to act the same as she normally did, even Oshime could tell something was off, something she was supposed to have remembered.

Even as the woman's clothes for the day were picked out, a nice semi-formal outfit she was only forced to wear for special, non-work related events, Oshime could feel the gears in her mind cranking, looking to get the information off the tip of her tongue. Even as one of her folded up garments was pulled out of their drawer, Oshime could only nervously dig her foot into the floor of her room, embarrassed at her inability to remember what Lany had expected of her.

"Umm...it's not my birthday, is it, Mommy?"

Lany gave a small frown as she walked over to her adoptive daughter, grabbing at the zipper to her PJ's and tugging it down, stripping the much smaller adult woman.

"Unfortunately, no. Though, it is someone's birthday."

She casually reached a hand up to gently rub at her flowery tiara atop her head. The tiara had once been in perfect condition. But over the years, it's silvery-sheen had waned and dulled. The bright red ruby in the center flower was chipped in a few places, but even so, Lanying refused to replace it or get it fixed.

Snapping back to reality, Lany realized that at some point, she had taken her tiara off. She gave a gentle smile at the tiara and replaced it upon her head.

"It's my late husband's birthday...the man who would have been your father had he still be around."

A single tear escaped from Lany's eye as she spoke, however she ignored it as she walked over to Oshi's clothes, absentmindedly handing them to her adopted daughter.

"Just...get dressed please. I need to go check on your sister."

The normally calm and composed Lanying quickly walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her as she did so. She quickly looked around the hallway to make sure that nobody else was around, and straightened herself up before heading off to Meili's room to check on how she was doing.

Re: Birthday with a Grave (Lany, Oshi)

Despite being stripped almost naked, Oshime did not so much as react, her mind working too hard on thinking of the date to care that her Mommy was undressing her; she was Mommy, that was just part of her job on most days, anyway.

Someone's birthday? But if it was not her own, then whose could it be? It was not Lany's nor was it the little brat's, so...oh. OOOOOOH...oh...

“I'm sorry, Mommy...” Oshime said in a hushed whisper, having figured it out even before the woman could explain it to her. Not having known the man, Oshime was not used to thinking of him nor did she usually remember when his birthday was. He was very important to Lany, however, so the scientist felt awful about forgetting about this day, especially when just moments ago she was obliviously bounding around excited for some pancakes. The tear that slid down Lany's face just made her feel all the worse for her own infantile behavior.

She quietly took the clothes as offered and started getting dressed, feeling too ashamed of her foolishness to worry about modesty in front of her own mother. She hesitated as she finished getting dressed but eventually she stepped out of the room and into the hallway, her imminent pancake breakfast feeling like more of a worrisome event than the treat she had originally thought them to be.

Lany came upon Meili's door and knocked upon the door before walking in. She gave a gentle smile at seeing her "oldest" daughter dressed and ready to go. She casually walked over and ruffled at Meili's curly blonde hair. Each and every day, Meili was looking more and more like her late father.

"Come on Meili, let's go get breakfast with your sister."

Lany walked out of her oldest daughter's room, waiting for Meili to follow before heading to the kitchen. Along the way, she ran into some of the Baozhai elders, all of whom would be joining them later today. They gave Lany a polite bow before heading in their own direction, away from the kitchen. As they walked into the kitchen, Meili broke the silence.

"Mother...why do we have to do this every year? I know father...well...actually I don't know...but from what you've told me about him, father would have wanted you to move on by now."

Meili's words struck Lany to the core. Perhaps she was right. Perhaps it was time to stop doing this every year...no...if she didn't do this, she wouldn't feel right. She'd feel that she'd bring disgrace to Junichiro. His birthday was one of the few days they were able to spend time alone together.

Oshime sat impatiently at the table, hoping to start gorging on pancakes before her dumb little big sister could come down and mock her and call her names for how childish she admittedly was being. That, and avoiding the awkward conversations that would come from the discussion of the somber day this was.

“It's not my fault I never knew him...” Oshime thought to herself, annoyed both at her own previous lack of sensitivity towards something that was so important to Lanying as well as her own inability to feel that level of morose sentimentality towards the subject of today's...festivities?
