The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Post by Hanzō Judai on Sat Jul 15, 2017 4:20 pm

Hanzō wandered around the Gotei's barracks, his head looking from side to side. Hanzo was wearing a standard uniform, however his head was covered by an ornate masked helmet. He wore his Zanpakuto at his hip, and other than the strange helmet, he looked like a typical Shinigami. However, the mask hid his face and the confusion on it. He was supposed to be looking for a particular office, but unfortunately he wasn't told whose office he was supposed to be going to, nor what barracks they were in. So, the Shinigami decided he would simply check them all until he stumbled into the correct office.

In his mind, he assumed it best to just try than ask for help. He'd only been out of the academy for a few days, and he didn't want to seem helpless. Hopefully he'd find it soon, but if not, it probably wouldnt be a big deal.

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Post by Shiroki on Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:06 am

He had other things on his mind as he rounded the corner at a run, uncaring of anything that might be in the way.

A regular state; in other words, for someone who had just encountered an unfortunate run-in with the Shinigami Women's Association.

Frankly it was becoming ridiculous. In normal places, one could usually cross the street without being mobbed.

Okay, so he was exaggerating. But only a bit. Just because someone looked 9 didn't mean they had to be treated like a little kid, did it? The universe, unfortunately, appeared to disagree.

The unexpected collision forced all the wind out of him and knocked Shiroki onto his rear, one hand instinctively reaching for the sealed zanpakuto in its sheath. Knowing his luck, it would be the Vice-Chairman of the WSA again and no amount of shikai release would help him in the slightest. At any moment now, hands would be picking him up and making for his cheeks. Though if he was lucky, he would be able to escape before they moved on from cheek-pinching to hugs.

The skinny cub suppressed a momentary shudder and resigned himself to his fate: Hugs. Always with the hugs.

It would be a while before he registered it wasn't the WSA he had bumped into after all, but a stranger he did not recognize. The black Shihakusho suggested the stranger was a Shinigami, as did the zanpakuto at his side; but the headpiece he wore was something else. Feeling the stranger's eyes upon him made Shiroki suddenly aware of how disheveled he appeared without his upper uniform and badge of office. Hopefully, this wouldn't be anyone who could report him for inappropriate attire. It could even be someone from the First Division, for all he knew.

Just to be on the safe side, better make himself scarce. Brushing himself off, he made to offer a murmured apology, but a sudden intake of breath prevented his moving on. Shiroki gave himself the once-over, realizing how he might look to someone else: a little child, barefoot and dressed in black Shinigami hakama, carrying what might even be a weapon while wandering about alone and un-escorted in a section of the Seretei where civilians were not permitted to go.

True, he could not see the stranger's expression behind his mask; but he had a sense of the man reaching those same conclusions he just had all the same. One thing was for certain, Shiroki had no desire to cool his heels in a holding cell while waiting for his Captain to come and explain that no; he wasn't a ryoka, yes; he was a member of the Gotei, and if-you-wouldnt-mind-could-you-please-release-my-lieutenant-from-custody-thank-you.

He stopped himself from reaching for his baton (no need to be charged for resisting arrest if he could help it, after all), and held out both hands/paws in a placatory gesture. "Um. I can explain,"

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Hanzō shook his head, placing a hand on his hip where the child had run into him. What was it about the Seireitei that everyone was in such a hurry? Didn't anyone ever walk around here like decent people? No, no, he thought, it was always running or that awful Shunpo. He had no idea how anyone even did that, and he told himself he didn't need Shunpo to be a powerful Shinigami one day. Yeah, or a Shikai, his thoughts added.

Shaking his helmeted head again, clearing himself of these thoughts, he looked at the child again. The Shinigami, he amended. Great, probably someone ranked higher than me. And just a kid, too. But, seeing the paw-like fingers caused him to smile, unseen behind the mask. A Werewolf, huh? Didn't see too many of them, most of them being Nobles or from packs in the Rukongai.

The unseated Shinigami stood with his hands on his hip, his helmeted head looking down on the other Shinigami. Not seeing any insignia to identify the kid's rank, Hanzō decided the kid must have been unseated, like himself. That was a relief. "Where's the fire, kid? Running around without looking could get you in a lot of trouble. You might have run into a Lieutenant, or gods forbid a Captain."

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Well. This certainly was a surprise.

Apparently he wasn't in danger of being arrested after all; for trespassing, improper attire or anything else. And much more importantly, it clearly wasn't anybody from the Women's Association either.

That last point alone made the stranger okay in his book.

"Sorry," he amended, craning his head to meet the man's eye. Mask; whatever. Shiro knew for a fact that people liked it if you looked them in the eye. It made you seem more trustworthy, for some reason. Unless of course it was the 11th squad; who would waste no time in picking a fight over a staring contest. But since nothing of that sort was happening, he seemed to be in the clear...for now.

Alright, so his new acquaintance was neither an uptight rule-enforcer from the 1st Division; anybody from the WSA or somebody from 11th looking for a thrill. He raised an excellent point about watching where he was going though. Most fellow Lieutenants knew who he was and wouldn't make too much fuss, but Captains might not appreciate being run into. And it was Shiroki's fault for not watching where he was going to begin with. So he felt he owed this person something, for starters.

"I'm Shiroki," First things first, get introductions out of the way. Unlike many others, he offered the informal first name instead of the second; preferring to save the latter for official purposes--yet another habit which made people view him as younger than he really was. Now that the threat of arrest was far on the horizon, he could see the stranger was a little out of place. Not many would be strolling when they could be using Shunpo, unless they were walking with someone else to be polite. He tabled that observation for later.

Come to think about it, maybe the stranger was waiting for someone and didn't want to use flash step in case he overshot and missed his contact. Well, that was easy enough to manage. If it turned out that the stranger was meeting someone Shiro could save him time and just fetch that person over. He was good at fetching. Also seeking. Not to mention getting into places he shouldn't be: all in all, a useful combination for such a situation. "Can I help you with something, Mister--?"

He centered himself and slipped easily into the reiatsu spectrum; familiar threads of reishii ribbons manifesting like streamers around him--each clamoring for attention, sending up unspoken challenge to anyone who could track them right to their owners. Ready or not, here I come.

Time for some hide and seek?

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Post by Hanzō Judai on Wed Sep 06, 2017 9:35 pm

Hanzo pushed the left sleeve of his uniform upwards, revealing heavy-looking gold bracelets as he scratched an itch. He'd been itching all day, and wondered if he had fleas or something. His densely muscled arms were dark skinned and clearly showed overlapping red lines from this activity. His unreadable face grimaced behind the mask, thinking it was actually likely his apartment had some kind of insect infestation.

"I'm Hanzō Judai," he said, lowering his sleeve. It still bugged him, but he knew he shouldn't be scratching at it. His voice echoed faintly inside the helmet, and it made his already deep voice deeper. "And actually, I'm looking for someplace right now. You wouldn't happen to know where the nearest barracks would be, would you?"

Hanzo was relaxed, despite being two hours late for whatever appointment he was going to. With any luck, they'd forget they even wanted him in the first place. Some part of him was trying to remind him who Shiroki was, the name faintly familiar to him.

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

While being unable to indulge in Otokoyo was mildly disappointing, he could work with this as well.

"We could go to the 2nd, if you like," he had been on the way there anyway. Then again, that wouldn't be the nearest one. Also, Shiroki was kind of liking being incognito and it wouldn't do to have someone address him by rank and give the game away. That meant both 2nd and 3rd Division was out, since he had served terms in the latter and was a member of the former. Captain Pekku might've played along with him, but he couldn't say for sure about the others.

Technically, the 11th Division would be closest; but being completely honest with himself Shiro couldn't think of a reason why anyone would want to go there in the first place. One avoided the 11th, not sought them out. It was a necessary detour reasonable people made to get from point A to B.

The most sensible option, he had to admit to himself, would be to accompany the man to Squad One and let them sort everything out. Chances were the Command Division would definitely know where to direct him.

Hm, but then again-- He tilted his head to one side to consider Judai-san more carefully. There was no question, he did appear to be on the imposing side; someone who could probably have fit in well with 11th.

Neither option appealed particularly to Shiro at the moment. They could either go together to 11th; where chances were likely at least one of them might get beat up, or else to Squad One--where Lieutenant...uh, that is to say Captain Sabi would shake her head and treat him to an extra-long lecture about how Shinigami should take pride in their appearance even if they weren't blessed with the privilege of belonging to the Noble Tsuyosa House. That would be almost as bad as being beaten up; especially if the Captain Commander happened to overhear. He wasn't overly thrilled at his options.

Maybe best to let Judai-san decide where they went

"If you want the nearest, that would be 11th. But if you were looking for directives in particular the Command Division is best. Unless you happen to know the person or thing you're looking for--then we could skip all that and I find it for you,"

He looked up again for an answer, seeing then the angry red trails on Judai-san's arms. "Ah," the cub had the courtesy to sound somewhat abashed. "I haven't... given you fleas, have I?"

He felt fine, so was certain he hadn't. Well, mostly certain. Maybe 80 percent-sure. That would be embarrassing. The Captain would never let him hear the end of it.

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

The helmet on Hanzo's head shook from side to side slowly. He wondered if he'd find the office he needed soon... The helmet was really starting to hurt his ears, and his tail was bent awkwardly under the bottom half of his uniform. But, he considered them a price worth paying to keep his secret of being a Shapeshifter.

"I suppose the Eleventh would probably be the best option,
seeing as I'm already late. If I take much longer, who knows what'll happen,
" he said, voice deep behind the helmet. The Deva-like face on his helmet was still grinning despite the slight worry in his voice.

Hanzō pointed around until finding the direction of the Eleventh Division from the small child Shinigami. As Hanzō scratched his other arm, he sighed, saying in a low conversational voice, "I think it's from my new apartment, actually. I should've realized there was a problem when the rent was so cheap."

Alright. 11 it is then

Judai-san did not look like he needed help finding the way. Not with the sound of shouts and fighting in the distance that was an obvious indicator...and was that, was that an explosion? The plume of smoke rising from the horizon made Shiro wince. That could mean paperwork somebody had to fill out and hopefully it wasnt going to be him.

But things could be worse. If the 11th were fighting then maybe no one would pay him any notice. And better yet, it would be a good place to hide from the Womens Association till they lost interest in searching from him. He did not think anyone in 11th belonged to the WSA. Even making such a connection sent up 'unable to compute' error messages in his head.

And since he wasnt the cause of the insectoid issue maybe Judai-san wouldnt mind him tagging along. He could use the opportunity to study 11th combat tactics. Chances were one of them would be on his hit list soon enough. Always good to prepare for when teammates decide to betray your organization out of the blue. It happened more times than one would think.

'Would you like some company, Judai-san?''

Hanzo turned his head, looking towards the eleventh. An explosion? Ears ringing painfully, he turned back to the child Shinigami. Or... Pup, Shinigami.

The man shrugged, thinking it'd be best to have company. It was still a decent distance to walk. He wondered if he should learn how to Shunpo at some point. Not that it was necessary.

"I suppose I could enjoy the company."

While it was true that he had been to 11th on occasion, his earlier impression was that they had higher standards than this.

Coming from a shinigami who wasn't a stranger himself to being chewed out by superiors, that was really saying something.

Neither Shiroki nor Judai-san were challenged as they casually strolled through the gates, past a pair of dozing sentries sporting impressive shiners and broken noses. Not that the sentries would be in any condition to stop them even if they wanted to, though one volunteered an unconscious grunt when Shiro was forced to climb over the unresponding body to continue.

He nodded his thanks to Judai-san, who had absently helped him scale that obstruction--attention mostly focused on the empty courtyard and simultaneous scuffles beyond.

''If you were looking for the Captain you may be out of luck. Doesnt seem to be at home,'' he couldnt see the larger man's expression behind that mask, but had little trouble imagining it. Since it would not be much different from his own when he first laid eye on 11th Division himself. ''Not what you expected?''

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Post by Hanzō Judai on Fri Sep 08, 2017 10:27 am

Hanzō's shoulders rose and fell in a shrug. The Captain and Lieutenant were a busy pair, if he recalled. Well, he supposed that depends on how one defines "busy". Regardless, he doubted he was supposed to meet up with the Third Seat or anyone else; in the Eleventh, those seats just represented strength, not responsibility. That's why he only knew the first two, because if he was going to become the strongest Shinigami in Seireitei, he'd have to defeat them one day... Preferably after unlocking Shikai.

He looked down at the nameless sword on his hip. His Asauchi, a Zanpakuto without a name. Names were important in Soul Society, and he felt that he should learn as many- He breathed in sharply, his head snapping back to the small child beside him. The small, Werewolf child beside him. "Shi-Shiroki? N-not Lieutenant Shiroki, right?" He stammered, his deep voice shaky.

Aww, shit, Hanzō thought, how stupid could I be? How many Werewolf children could possibly be Shinigami and named Shiroki? It's not my fault I didn't recognize Captain Pekku's Lieutenant, he wasn't wearing his badge and... Aww damn it all... A new sense of forbidding drifted through him. The Second Division... His brain finally pieced together everything he knew already about this errand he'd be sent on, turned around and told to go. They hadn't been trying to get him out of the barracks, they'd pointed him straight towards the Second Division and he was completely oblivious. He'd just thought the other exits were out of order. He was two hours late for a meeting, and the guy he was probably supposed to meet was right in front of him. With luck, maybe the Werewolf forgot or wasn't told they were supposed to have been in a meeting hours ago?

Re: The Masked Shinigami (OPEN)

Post by Shiroki on Fri Sep 08, 2017 1:41 pm

Oops. Busted.

''Plain Shiro is fine,'' the poor fellow looked like he might be going into shock. ''Look, its ok really. No one's gonna take your head off. Ì'm not going to, anyway. Can't say about those guys,'' Shiroki gestured at the unconscious goons. ''Maybe we should go someplace quieter and safer where people wont try to kill you. I find that sort of thing really ruins my day, Judai-san...wait. Judai-san...you're from the Academy aren't you? They told us someone would show up, we've been wondering who the new officer would be. Sorry, when you mentioned the apartment l really should've known. Blame the captain for that, she has a really wierd sense of...just a sec,''

One of the guards was beginning to stir, shaking the dizziness from his head as he propped himself up on his zanpakuto and took an unsteady lurching step towards the pair. Unstable as he might be, it did not seem to affect his aim as he approximated a fighting stance and brought his katana swinging towards them. The aim was way off, but while it wasnt anywhere close to reaching him, it might give Officer Judai some trouble. To Mugen with it, he had spent enough time in squad 11 for one day. ''Sorry Judai-san, we need to take this elsewhere,'' reaching out with one paw to catch hold of the larger man's kosode, they flash stepped away.

-----

Nice and cool in the officer's mess. Just how he liked it.

''Sorry,'' said Shiroki again over their round of drinks. His treat, he figured the poor man could use one after such a day. ''My fault, l should've realized earlier but it hasn't really been my day. When you didn't come l went looking for you, then ran into the women's association...'' an involuntary shudder. ''You know the rest,''

''Your fruit punch, Lieutenant,'' their bartender set a wide, shallow bowl before them, decorated with bright designs. ''And your badge,''

''I hate it. Too sweet. And don't call me that,'' Shiroki glared at his drink like it was a mortal enemy. ''Don't tell me...Captain put you up to this, didn't she?''

''She says you got to wear the badge if you don't want it to go like last time. Told me to tell you she isn't bailing you out if it happens again,''

''Gimme that,'' not bothering with the jacket, he slipped the wooden annoyance up an arm. ''Happy now?''

Should have chosen a darker corner table where they wouldn't be noticed. Too late now though. Where we we? Ah yes. ''This is normally the part where l ask you why you chose to join the Second and if you knew anything about my unit. But we can skip that, l guess. You found me before l found you, and if that isn't a good sign l don't know what is. No one's beat me in hide and seek before,'' he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. ''Post is yours, if you still want it of course. No hard feelings either way, l know l didn't make the best impression,''

Damn. What was wrong with him today, he wasn't always this chatty. And what was with this stupid itch...oh. Great. All that and now fleas into the bargain. He found he could empathize with Judai-san now, those bites were irritating. Speaking of which...

''You can move into our barracks if you like, might as well make use of it. And in the meantime, maybe l can work out this insect problem. Least we could do when you're on our team, Judai-san,'' he grinned, and for a moment it was as though the Shinigami had been replaced by the puppy again: earnest and hopeful. Perhaps a child who could have most ryoka quaking in their clogs and one capable of tearing up hollows with that same delighted expression on his face...but still a kid for all that, and an adorable one to boot.

''Welcome to Retrieval,''

Hanzo looked at the drink on the table, cradled between his hands. The mug was warm; he honestly couldn't recall what he'd ordered. His head was swimming from all the information he had to process. He'd originally thought he was in trouble, but it turns out he was being assigned a division. His Captain would be a Shapeshifter, his Lieutenant a Werewolf. He looked down at the drink again, swirling it around. He'd have to remove the helmet to drink it. The drink swirled in his hand.

His arms hurt from scratching; the drink in his hand kept him occupied. "I would appreciate the offer to stay in the barracks, even the help with my apartment. I'm going to be honest. This... was not how I expected our meeting to go. To train, learn, under yourself and Captain Pekku is an honor, really. I hope I can help in any way possible."
